Parenting Series – The Power of Attachment

Parenting Series – The Power of Attachment

We are learning that the softer side of parenting and educating can be more important than anything else we do with kids.  In essence, it is not what we do with children that matters; it’s who we are in their lives that counts.  With so much information about educating our children and parenting, in general, we can start to doubt our own abilities.  Learning about attachment can help parents use their intuition to lead their children.

On Saturday, November 23, you are invited to come meet Dr. Sonia Vellet, an attachment pyschologist from Vancouver, who can help us harness attachment research to work peacefully and successfully with our kids.  It has been proven that children with strong attachments to the adults in their lives fare well academically and socially.  We hope to see you at the Child Care Resource and Referral office to learn with us later this month.

Dr. Gordon Neufeld, another attachment advocate from Vancouver, granted this interview recently, explaining some basic attachment concepts.   This interview might unsettle you a bit.  It can open up a lot of new questions.  Although the interview is quite long, the conclusion at 17:00 is worth the time.

Please come to discuss your ideas and questions with other parents and with Dr. Vellet on November 23rd.

Parent Conference 2013

Parent Conference 2013

This is a repost from January 23rd.  Please take a look!

The 6th parent conference is Saturday, March 9th at North Peace Secondary School.  There are a few interesting twists this year.

  • Attend alone or with your children.  You can bring your kids 3+ years and older.  Either register them for child minding (3 – 5 years), enter them in the Fun Fair (6 – 12 years) or attend sessions together (various ages 10+).
  • Attend 1, 2 or all 3 sessions.  No obligation to stay all day.
  • Traditional keynote has been replaced by energizing activities in the gym to stimulate your thinking and “grow” your brain.

And as usual, it’s all FREE!  There are many door prizes and give aways for participants.  Many thanks to our sponsors Success by 6, Children First, Child Care Resource and Referral and School District 60.

There are sessions for many interests including:

  • bullying
  • online safety
  • numeracy
  • art journalling
  • oral language development
  • play based learning
  • quad and outdoor recreational safety
  • physical literacy
  • understanding challenging behaviours

Download the registration package for more information then register online.  If you prefer, you can fill out a paper copy and fax it to Pat Lang, 250.785.6123 or drop it off at any SD60 school.

Pre-School Health Round-up

Pre-School Health Round-up

Health screening for pre-schoolers is tomorrow.

The Pre-school Health Round-up is a FUN event.  We try to make it engaging for kids and parents alike.  There will be lots of interesting activities for kids and valuable information for parents.  I always enjoy being a part of this event because it is so supportive of families.

The Totem Mall is a new partner this spring. We are hoping the venue will add an element of excitement while making it easier for families to participate.  The convenient parking is the best part.  Please plan to spend about an hour with your little ones.

Families in Motion – Robert Ogilvie

Our Families in Motion event was well attended on Friday night at Robert Ogilvie.  We had 44 people attend, kids with their parents.  There were many pink cheeks, lots of giggles and hugs.  We all got lots of exercise and had lots of FUN!

Our next event will be at Bert Ambrose, February 15th.  The Families in Motion events are always a great opportunity to get active and spend an excellent family evening.

Come join us at 9907 86 Street.

Friday is Families in Motion at the CDC 6 – 7:30.  It overlaps with the parade, which is unfortunate.  Being outside and walking is great for families, as well.  But I hope to see lots of you there.
